Today, MGX Minerals Inc. announced that a comprehensive drill and metallurgical program has already commenced at its silicon properties in British Columbia.

To date, 4 drill holes have already been completed at its Koot Silicon Property in British Columbia (near the company´s 100% owned Driftwood Magnesium Project). Analysis of drill core has shown competent quartzite throughout and that this material has potential to be upgradeable to silicon metal for use in solar panels. Such material, which must be very high grade, is quite rare, especially in politically stable jurisdictions close to infrastructure and target markets. Historic exploration outlined a mineralized zone spanning approximately 400 m consisting of high-purity quartzite (SiO2; silicon dioxide). In 2015, MGX took 8 rock chip samples from surface outcrops showing high grades in excess of 97% SiO2 in 3 different zones. MGX intends to drill a minimum of 13 holes and use the core not only for grade analysis but also for a metallurgical program to test for suitability of upgrading to silicon metal and solar grade silicon. Good results may have the power to make institutional investors (e.g. renewable energy funds) and solar panel producers sit up and take notice.

Soon, drilling will also start on the company’s Wonah Silicon Property to test a relatively large quartzite that is exposed over a strike length of approximately 850 m. Previous mapping, sampling and surveying have identified 2 lenses, the Central Zone (traced for approximately 500 m) and the South Zone (traced for 350 m along strike). Both zones consist of a highly competent quartzite with approximately 50 meters in width. In 2015, MGX took 11 rock chip samples from both zones showing extremely high grades in excess of 99% SiO2 throughout, with a peak of 99.9% SiO2, which is rather spectacular, especially if drilling can confirm such grades over significant lengths.

Material from MGX’s Gibraltar Silicon Property has already been shipped to Dorfner ANZAPLAN, a leading silicon metal metallurgy and process engineering company. The process design for testing is complete and physical material has been received. The purpose of the metallurgy is to generate standard silicon metal (95-96% Si) and potentially solar grade silicon metal (99.9999% Si) process design options for feedstock from MGX’s local silicon projects.

With its 100% subsidiary ZincNyx Energy Solutions, MGX is in the process of establishing itself in the energy storage industry ("ZincNyx Now Ready To Start Commercialization Of Battery Systems For Mass Storage Of Energy"), so it makes total sense to simultaneously advance its silica projects. Thanks to the most recent capital infusion of $15.5 million CAD (primarily from institutionals and high-net-worth individuals), some of the raised funds could be invested smartly into the company’s silica mining projects.

Solar panels are a cornerstone to remote and distributed energy solutions. Solar, combined with a mass storage system such as that currently under development by ZincNyx, serves to replace or augment diesel generators, as well as having broad applications in energy storage for residential and commercial grid load balancing and backup, and in providing primary and backup power for industrial sites, telecommunications, large scale computer server arrays and military bases. Additional information on the integration of solar with ZincNyx energy storage systems is available at

“Solar is going to be the key. I think, though, with the right partners, we’ve got something great here,” ZincNyx CEO Suresh Singh told Business in Vancouver. He expects the energy grid is going to change fundamentally in the coming years after companies spent years focusing on solar energy solutions. Because the price of solar has fallen so significantly recently, Singh said the focus is now being directed toward storing all the energy that is generated. Energy storage solutions have increasingly become a holy grail of sorts for tech companies.
